Derek Devine becomes Social Media Strategist

The Communication and Marketing Office recently welcomed Derek Devine as the social media strategist. Devine now runs the Alma College Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat accounts.

“I plan to take [Alma’s social media] to the next level by producing creative and engaging content that matches the dynamic around campus,” said Devine. “I want to take social media to the next level so it’s engaging and fun, but also a healthy mix of fun and serious because that’s what college is all about. It’s the time of your life, but you also create a career for yourself. It’s something I look forward to doing.”

Devine graduated from Spring Arbor University in 2014 with a BS in broadcasting and communications. After college, he interned with the Detroit Tigers at their Florida training site working with social media, the website and media relations with players and coaches. He also ran the video board.

“It’s one of the most incredible things I’ve ever done,” said Devine. “I got to meet all the coaches and players and spend quality time with them in comparison with the average fan. I got to work alongside the players and coaches, an experience I’ll never forget.”

Devine is an Alma local and graduate of Alma High School. He believes that knowing the area and people in it gives him “a bit of an advantage in getting started.”

“I was super excited,” said Devine about when he found out he got the job. “I was excited to start right away. Everyone in the office has been very helpful making me feel like part of the team. We even celebrated my birthday on day three in the office.

“I love [Alma so far],” said Devine. “The office is very friendly and engaging. Definitely a staff that’s willing to reach a greater goal together to build more. It’s exciting to be a part of. In just a few weeks I feel like I’m at home. And I like the snacks.”

Devine chose to come home to Alma because of the connections he had here in the hopes of continuing to build a more positive relation between the college and the city of Alma. He also plans to to not only get students, faculty, and staff to engage, but the community as well.

“I’m trying to build personal relationships with those around the office as well as professional relationships,” says Devine. “I’ve been doing a lot of research—including the website that Katie Keaton does a marvelous job on.”

Devine mentioned the community feel as being his favorite part of Alma so far.

“It’s been awesome going to departments and having people know my name. It’s not something you see at a bigger organization. I think that’s been one of the best parts so far, and the fact that I can be in my hometown and help make a difference.”

Devine said he plans to form a good relationship and partnership with the Almanian and other campus media outlets so they can work together to create engaging content.

“I think it’s fun to work with a student newspaper, because they know everyone and what’s going on,” said Devine. “I think it’s really important to have a student newspaper on campus that engages with what’s going on. That was a big part of my college experience. I got to know those around campus that I never would have gotten to know and read up on what’s happening.”

Devine said he looks forward to connecting with anyone who is willing to connect with him and to hearing student stories and getting to know staff and faculty.
